Local Features
동대문구는 서울특별시 동부 중앙에 위치하여 남쪽은 성동구와 접하고 있으며 동쪽으로는 중랑천을 경계로 중랑구, 북쪽으로
는 성북구, 서쪽으로는 종로구와 접하고 있다.
일찍이 동대문구는 청량리지역, 경동시장, 청과시장을 중심으로 부도심 근린생활기능을 수행하는 동부 서울의 중심지로서 천호
대로, 왕산로, 고산자로 등 주요 간선도로가 관통하고 청량리역 등 지하철 1호선 및 2호선이 통과하는 교통망이 구축되어 주요
교통관문의 역할을 하고 있다.
또한 21세기를 이끌어 갈 인재육성의 산실이 될 한국과학기술원, 산업연구원 등 8개의 전문연구시설과 경희대, 한국외국어대,
서울시립대 등이 있는 교육 도시이자 청량리 재정비촉진지구, 전농·답십리 재정비촉진지구, 이문·휘경 재정비촉진지구 등 도시
개발사업이 활발히 추진 중인 21세기 동부서울의 중심도시로 나아가고 있다.
Dongdaemun-gu is located in the center of eastern Seoul and is adjacent to Seongdong-gu to the south,
Jungnang-gu across the Jungnangcheon Stream to the east, Seongbuk-gu to the north and Jongno-gu to the
west.
Since times past, Dongdaemun-gu has been the center of eastern Seoul, centering on the Cheongnyangni
area, Gyeongdong Market, and the Vegetable and Fruit Market, serving as a sub-downtown. It’s traffic
networks are penetrated by major main roads such as Cheonho Dearo, Wangsanno, Gosanjaro and passed by
subway No. 1 and 2, allowing it to serve in the role as a major traffic gateway.
It is also an educational city, home to eight specialized research facilities including the Korea Institute of
Scientific Technology and Industrial Research Center and universities such as Kyunghee University, Hanguk
University of Foreign Studies and the University of Seoul, which will become incubators for the talents who
will lead the 21st century. It moves forward toward being the central city of the 21st century's eastern Seoul,
where strategic city development plans are being actively implemented in areas such as the Cheongnyangni
Development Promotion District, Jeonnong-Dapsimni New Town and Imun-Hwigyeong New Town District.
